My name is Dale Martelli and I am a father of 6, partner of an amazing teacher and academic, Dr. C. L. Paget, and a teacher at Vancouver Technical Secondary. I have been teaching since 1981; to quote Twain, “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
At Simon Fraser University, I studied History (with concentration in Middle East Studies) and Philosophy . I had the incredible fortune to work with Dr. William Cleveland as my M.A. supervisor in Middle East History, exploring the nature of revolution and colonialism in Syria in the 1920s and in Palestine in the 1930s. I owe so much of who I am as a teacher to Bill; he is always in my heart and mind when I am in the classroom.
In the 80s and 90s, whenever I was home or after settling into a continuing contract in Vancouver, I bounced around between elementary, secondary, and alternative education. I did a stint at Simon Fraser University as a Faculty Associate in the late 90s, returning to the classroom at Vancouver Technical Secondary in 1998. Today, I am the Social Studies Department Head and Flex Humanities Coordinator as well as being the British Columbia Social Studies Teachers Association President.
My PhD was in the philosophy of history education, exploring the theory of analytical hermeneutics, Design-Based Research orientation, and empathetic and transformative engagement in history education.

The following thesis is so old it had to be uploaded from micro-fiche. Never used the historical thinking concepts when writing this; it was just all one holistic methodological blend. Theoretically, I thought it as a "Everything and the Kitchen Sink" approach. It is interesting that in all my methodology courses for my M.A., not once did we talk about discrete categories of method. I guess it was just mimicry of what we saw as good historical writing. My mentor, Dr. William Cleveland, was one of the very best. Never came close.
